CBF Announces Wallace Award, Olerud Two-Way Player And National Pitcher Of The Week Honors
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Core Jackson (Utah), Austin Smith (San Diego) and Haden Dow (Southeast Missouri State) have earned weekly honors from the College Baseball Foundation (CBF) for their respective performances last week it was announced on Tuesday.
Each week the CBF recognizes weekly award winners in conjunction with the Brooks Wallace Award, John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award and the National Pitcher of the Year Award.
Brooks Wallace Award Player of the Week (Nation’s Most Outstanding Shortstop)
Core Jackson, SS, Senior, University of Utah, Wyoming, Ontario
Jackson turned in some of the nation’s best performances both at the plate and in the field helping the Utes to 4-1 record against Long Beach State, UC Riverside and California Baptist. The senior shortstop hit a scorching .565 with 13 hits in 23 at bats to up his season batting average to .458. Jackson racked up 10 RBI and 10 runs scored, while also earning five doubles, one triple, two walks and one stolen base. In the field, Jackson handled 26 chances flawlessly, earning 13 assists, 13 putouts and turning five double plays.
John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Week Award
Austin Smith, OF/LHP, Senior, University of San Diego, El Cajon, California
A potent pitching and hitting combination for the University of San Diego, Smith helped key the Toreros to a weekend series win over CSU Bakersfield. On the mound, Smith teamed with starter Cal Scolari on a four-hit shutout to take game one of the series. Smith earned the save after pitching four innings, yielding no runs and only one hit while walking one and striking out seven. In addition, Smith racked up two hits, including one double, three RBI and a run scored in the three-game series.
National Pitcher of the Week
Haden Dow, LHP, Graduate, Southeast Missouri State University, St. John, New Brunswick
Dow turned in a complete game shutout to earn the win over Purdue-Ft. Wayne on Sunday. The southpaw scattered three hits and racked up nine strikeouts, while not walking a batter in the Redhawks 5-0 victory. Dow is 2-1 on the season and has given up only one earned run in 18.2 innings. Through three starts this season, Dow has a 0.48 ERA with one walk and 20 strikeouts.

Brooks Wallace Award
The Brooks Wallace Award is presented annually to honor the nation's most outstanding shortstop. It is a tribute to Brooks Wallace, a slick-fielding shortstop at Texas Tech from 1977-80 who passed away at age 27 after a courageous battle with leukemia. Prior to 2009, the award recognized the national player of the year.
John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award
The John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award is presented annually by the College Baseball Foundation to honor the nation's top combo pitcher-position player. Olerud, who was inducted into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007, was a standout pitcher and first baseman at Washington State University from 1987 through 1989.
National Pitcher of the Year Award
The Pitcher of the Year award, college baseball's version of the Cy Young Award which was created in 2009, is given annually to the nation's top collegiate pitcher.
